Response to Stanford's aggressive letter to disperse posted to President's door

11/18/2015

On Tuesday evening, the Stanford administration sent a missive to the Fossil Free encampment, proclaiming that "unscheduled events and other unsanctioned gatherings" were a violation of University policy and the Fundamental Standard, and warned of "potential consequences" if the students did not de-camp immediately to White Plaza.

Fossil Free Stanford's (somewhat cheeky, yet deadly serious) response was posted 24 hours later:

1) We're not moving
2) You're in violation of the University's Fundamental Standard

Fossil Free Stanford declared: "By choosing to continue to invest in the fossil fuel industry, thereby fueling climate destruction and environmental injustice, you are in violation of the Fundamental Standard. As a member of the Stanford Board of Trustees, you are expected to uphold our University's values and listen to the overwhelming consensus of the Stanford community."

Read the full text of both letters here.

UPDATE: Coverage in the Stanford Daily here.
Security guards took shifts in front of the University president's office, where the Official Notice From Fossil Free Stanford was posted on the door.

A suggestoin for you would be to now focus your attention on the solution.

Assuming the University considers to divest the funds away from fossil fuels, how do they support the renewable energy revolution.

The portion of funds that they were otherwise allocating to fossil fuels (billions) should be invested in taking the entire university campus "off-the-grid".

I am a former private equity investor that wrote several plans to make this happen for universities, and show them the numerous advantages to such an investment.

Imagine solar panels, windmills and geothermal power all over campus. Imagine the sustainability, security and longevity of a university that was making 100% of its own energy, completely "off the grid". The energy security for the endowment is indisputable.

Imagine the marketing prowess of such a new age idea for incoming studens applicants.

Imagine the education of such renewable energy production on campus.

And imagine that it could be done for a small portion of the investment currently had in the fossil fuel industry by Stanford.

And imagine the finacial savings returns for the endowment (exisitng cost of electricty, oil, etc.) that Univerisity incurs.

I would be happy to talk further with you about this concept. I wrote a powerpoint presentation as well that I would be happy to share with you.

Good work! I wish you all the best of luck in your endevours.

Aloha from Hawaii,
Doug Wolkon
